Concerts Royaux No. 1: Prelude, Allemande, Menuet, Gavotte
During the 1700s, when the French composer François Couperin lived, it was common for musicians to be employed by royalty and to write music for their entertainment. This collection of short dances was written for Sunday afternoon concerts in honor of King Louis XIV—but Revelation 21 tells us that in the New Creation, the kings and nations will bring their glory into the New Jerusalem, and I love to imagine the most beautiful, most prized artistic expressions of every culture being laid at the feet of King Jesus, being performed for his enjoyment. What a concert to attend, on the eternal Sunday afternoon of the New Creation!
“And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.” Revelation 21:23-26
