Jesus, Take My Burden

performed by Naomi, Joel, Malachi, Kaleb, and Theo Stamoolis    written by Joel Stamoolis

Matthew 11:28-30 is a favorite passage of mine: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” The season of Lent is one often associated with spiritual discipline, and it’s easy for me to slip into thinking that means I need to do something difficult for Jesus--but Jesus has called us to surrender our
difficulties to him, and find rest as we serve him in the strength he gives us.

Joel wrote this response to Matthew 11:29-30 years ago, and it’s one we sang as a lullaby to our sons when they were little. When I think of this song, I can still hear
their sleepy toddler requests for a bedtime song: “Jesus take Mom’s burden?” Yes. Yes, he does.
